(excerpted from "When Hate Groups Come To Town" by Center for Democratic Renewal, 1992, Montgomery, Alabama)

  2. Organize victim's support groups for those who have been the target of hate crimes.
  3. Encourage school officials to institute policies to deal with bigotry and hate incidents and use curricula on the history of the Klan and Nazis, the civil rights movement, African American history and the Holocaust.
  4. Investigate incidents of bigoted violence and increase public exposure of them.
  5. Organize responses to Klan marches or other types of recruitment activity.
  6. Educate the community about hate activity through such events as forums or conferences.
  7. Document hate activity---compile data on hate group organizing and bigoted violence and issue periodical reports to educate the public.
  8. Educate the media on appropriate coverage of white supremacist/hate group activity.
  9. Encourage public officials to speak out.
  10. Organize a liaison with police to establish protocols to deal with bias crimes as well as to facilitate police training.
