Ten Things Citizens Can Do
To Counter Hate Crimes

Center for Democratic Renewal, 1992, Montgomery, Alabama)
- Help shape and lobby for legislation
at the state and municipal level, working to amend the current Colorado Ethnic Intimidation Law.
- Organize victim's support groups
for those who have been the target of hate crimes.
- Encourage school officials
to institute policies to deal with bigotry and hate incidents and use curricula
on the history of the Klan and Nazis, the civil rights movement, African
American history and the Holocaust.
- Investigate incidents of bigoted
violence and increase public exposure of them.
- Organize responses to Klan
marches or other types of recruitment activity.
- Educate the community about
hate activity through such events as forums or conferences.
- Document hate activity---compile
data on hate group organizing and bigoted violence and issue periodical
reports to educate the public.
- Educate the media on appropriate
coverage of white supremacist/hate group activity.
- Encourage public officials
to speak out.
- Organize a liaison with police
to establish protocols to deal with bias crimes as well as to facilitate
police training.
