Bias Crimes Amendment Dies
Fourth Year in a Row........
April 8, 1998
EQUALITY Colorado announced ...On Thursday, April 9, HB 1268,
the bill to add sexual orientation, age, and disability, to the
state's Hate Crimes act, was killed in the Colorado House
Appropriations Committee. This marks the second year in a row
that the bill was killed in that committee, rather than have a
vote taken on the House floor on the merits of the bill. Two
years ago, the bill was withdrawn by its sponsor rather than
force the state Senate to vote on it. And 3 years ago it was
killed in the House Finance Committee.
Four years in a row, the bill has passed every committee at which
testimony was allowed. But rather than pass the bill, our
legislature seems unwilling to even FACE the issues of hate
crimes that target gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender
people, people with disabilities or seniors. The focus inevitably
each year is on the sexual orientation portion of the bill, not
the other categories listed.
