First of all, CUAH would like to thank everyone for their past support of the Hate Crimes bill.  We hope that this year we will finally see passage of this bill.

Ten Things Citizens Can Do To Counter Hate Crimes

THE PLEDGE: Making something good out of a bad situation, helping victims, and deterring future hate crimes.

In 1997 a Pennsylvania group developed "Project Lemonade." Faced with a Ku Klux Klan march in a small town, they decided to make something good out of a bad situation. People pledged money -- the longer the KKK rally lasted, the more money people promised. Project Lemonade succeeded because it gave the haters a disincentive to hold their rally (they'd raise money for programs to fight hate) and because it gave people of good will a way to act together and have their voice heard.

For the first time, CUAH.ORG's PLEDGE brings this same strategy to the internet, and makes it more effective because it involves Coloradans statewide. Sign onto the pledge (up to the limit you specify) and you will be notified anytime there is a significant hate group event anywhere in the state, and/or when a hate crime has been committed. You will get up-to-the-minute information, suggestions of how you can help, and information about mailing in your pledge.

WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO?

CUAH.ORG is a virtually paperless organization, so there are few costs. All pledge money is disbursed to help eliminate hate crimes and provide financial support for hate crime victims.  Your money will go one-half to the victims of hate crimes, one-half to community programs to combat hate crimes, such as police training, educational programs, and conferences.

It is terribly traumatic to be a victim of a hate crime. It is doubly traumatic to suffer the crime,  then feel alone. CUAH.ORG supports victims in two ways: 1) forwarding messages of support sent via this website and 2) giving financial support. For some victims, funds will make a huge difference in their ability to recover. Even more important, by receiving funds raised statewide from their neighbors, victims will know that Coloradans are people of good will who do not let other Coloradans suffer the bonechilling terror of hate crimes alone.

MAKING THE PLEDGE HELPS YOU TOO.  Making a pledge will give you the satisfaction of doing something important to help whenever one of our neighbors is a victim of a hate crime.

MAKING THE PLEDGE:

My Pledge:

I pledge (if other, specify ) every time there is serious hate group activity in Colorado, such as a Ku Klux Klan rally or a major conference of white supremacists. If groups like these know their activities will raise money to fight hatred, they may decide to hold their conclaves outside Colorado, or not at all.

I pledge (if other, specify ) every time there is a hate crime against property in Colorado. Because of my pledge, haters may think twice before burning a church, spray-painting a swastika on a synagogue, desecrating a cemetery, or defacing a neighborhood.

I pledge (if other, specify ) every time there is a hate crime against a person. People who commit hate crimes believe they won't get caught, so they can't think of a reason not to act. MY PLEDGE gives them a reason not to act.

You may to put a ceiling on the amount you want to pledge. Maximum: Per
